Physicians should take time to get educated on MACRA, determine whether the Quality Payment Program applies to their practice, and whether they will be participating in the MIPS or Advanced APM track. Preparing a practice for MACRA will help physicians avoid negative payment penalties and maximize incentive payments.  Below is a list of resources that provide in-depth details on the Quality Payment Program.

CMS Quality Payment Program

CMS Quality Payment Program website to learn about the program, explore measures, and access the Quality Payment Program Educational resource library which provides resources to help clinicians identify the measures and activities most meaningful to their practice or specialty and explore program options that best fit their practice.

CMS also has various on the ground resources to assist physicians with MACRA including:

  • Transforming Clinical Practice Initiative (TCPI) designed to support practices over the next four years in sharing, adapting, and developing quality improvement strategies. Physicians who participate in TCPI can learn about MIPS and how to move towards participating in Advanced APMs. For more information on TCPI including innovation models run in California, visit CMS’s TCPI website at
  • Quality Innovation Network (QIN)/Quality Improvement Organizations (QIOs) that contract with CMS to improve effectiveness, efficiency, economy, and quality of services delivered to Medicare beneficiaries. The Health Services Advisory Group, Inc. (HSAG) is the Medicare QIO in California and offers no-cost technical assistance to help physicians understand and successfully implement the Quality Payment Program through their Quality Payment Program Service Center.   • CMS Innovation Center APM Learning Systems supports the development and testing of innovative health care payment and service delivery models. It can help physicians find specialized information on successful participation in the Advanced APM track or assisting practices who are in an APM that is not an Advanced APM maximize the benefits of being in an APM to help them be successful in MIPS.
